Hour 1 to 24: The Spiritual Core and the Skyline

09:00 AM | The Right Basecamp Your 48 hour clock starts the second you drop your bags. The Medina is intense, so you absolutely need a quiet riad to retreat to. We always suggest places like Riad Fez Mahal. Stepping off the chaotic street into a massive, quiet courtyard with carved cedar ceilings and zellige tiles immediately grounds you. Grab a quick mint tea, adjust to the pace of the city, and head out.

10:30 AM | The Ancient Academies You have to start at the intellectual heart of the city: the Al Qarawiyyin Mosque and University. Built in 859 AD, it is the oldest operating university on earth. Non Muslims cannot go inside the prayer hall, but if you stand at the open doors, you get a beautiful view of the green tiled pavilions.

Right next door is the Medersa Al Attarine. Do not skip this. It is a 14th century Islamic school, and the floor to ceiling geometric tile work and hand carved stucco are mind blowing. It is the absolute peak of Moroccan craftsmanship.

1:30 PM | A Strategic Escape By early afternoon, the crowds around the monuments are at their peak. When travelers get overwhelmed by the heat and the noise, we tell them to find Restaurant La Cave. It is hidden behind an unassuming door just off the main path. The vibe inside is moody, cool, and super relaxed. It is the perfect sanctuary to sit down, eat a really good modern take on traditional Fassi food, and catch your breath.

3:30 PM | The Heart of the Medina Next, follow the scent of incense down to the Zaouia of Moulay Idriss II. This is the shrine of the man who founded the city, and it is the spiritual epicenter of Fez. The streets around it are a designated sacred space. You will see locals touching the carved wooden doors and brass bars for blessings. The atmosphere here feels completely suspended in time.

5:30 PM | The Panoramic Perspective To actually understand the scale of the maze you have been walking through, you have to get above it. Grab a petit taxi and head up the hill to the Borj Nord North Tower. After checking out the 16th century fort, walk a few steps over to the terrace at Hotel Les Merinides.

This is a true insider favorite. Order a coffee, sit on the terrace, and watch the sun set over the entire sprawling Medina. Seeing the thousands of rooftops and minarets light up from this height is the best view in the city and the perfect way to close out your first 24 hours.

Hour 24 to 48: The Artisans and The Celebration

09:00 AM | Dar Dbagh Chouara Tannery Start your second day early before the midday heat hits. Head straight to Dar Dbagh, the largest and oldest tannery in Fez. Go up to one of the terraces and look down. You will watch artisans dyeing leather in massive stone vats using the exact same methods they have used since the 11th century. It is raw, it smells strong, but it is a visually incredible look into how this city actually operates.

11:00 AM | The Copper Souk Walk over to Place Seffarine. You will hear the rhythmic hammering of metal long before you arrive. This is the historic metalworking square. Watch the guys shaping massive copper pots and intricate brass trays over open fires. This is the raw talent that outfits every riad in the Medina.

1:00 PM | The Physical Reset Walking the uneven Medina streets takes a toll on your legs. As locals, we know the only way to recover is a traditional Hammam. We send people to the marble steam rooms at Riad and Spa Dar Bensouda. The traditional black soap scrub completely pulls the travel fatigue out of your shoulders. You want to leave here feeling entirely refreshed, because tonight is the most important part of your trip.

3:30 PM | The Talaa Kebira Promenade Take a slow walk down Talaa Kebira, the main artery of the Medina. Now that you have seen the tanneries and the copper workers, you will look at the leather bags and brass lamps in the shops with total respect for how they were made. Grab one last street side tea and soak in the energy.
